Aïda Ouangraoua, Department of Computer Science, Principal Investigator
Aïda received a master's degree in Computer Engineering from ENSEIRB-MATMECA, France, and a master's degree and a PhD degree in Computer Science from Université de Bordeaux, France, under the co-supervision of Pascal Ferraro and Serge Dulucq. Her PhD thesis was on the development of models and algorithms for the comparison of biological treelike structures such as plant architectures and RNA structures. She did her postdoctoral training at Simon Fraser University and Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada, under the supervision of Cedric Chauve and Anne Bergeron, working on the reconstruction of ancestral gene orders and genomic rearrangements in eukaryots. She then joined INRIA Lille, France, as a researcher in the Bonsai Bioinformatics team headed by Hélène Touzet, working on various comparative genomics projects on genome rearrangement and RNA secondary structures.

Aïda is currently an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science of Université de Sherbrooke where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Computational and Biological Complexity. She loves teaching, supervising students and hiking. She is married and mother of two children.

Jean-David Aguilar, Department of Biochemistry, PhD student
Jean-David received a master's degree in Bioinformatics from Université de Bordeaux, France, after completing his master internship in the COBIUS lab in 2016. He is a molecular biologist who also completed a training in bioinformatics with experience in protein data analysis.

Jean-David is starting his PhD degree in Biochemistry with an option in Bioinformatics, working on the evolution of alternative proteins in eukaryots. He is co-supervised by professors Xavier Roucou (Department of Biochemistry, Université de Sherbrooke) and Aïda Ouangraoua. Apart from life science and computer science, he has a passion for physics. He is also an adept of sliding sports, surf and skateboard, through which he tests his theoretical knowledge about gravity (sometimes painful).

Sarah Belhamiti, Department of Biochemistry, MSc student
Sarah received a master's degree in Bioinformatics from Université de Nantes, France, after completing her master internship in the COBIUS lab in 2016. She is a molecular biologist with a training in bioinformatics and experience in NGS and gene expression data analysis.

Sarah started her MSc degree in Biochemistry with an option in Bioinformatics in November 2016, working on the identification and evolution of G-quadruplexes in transcriptomes. She is co-supervised by professors Jean-Pierre Perreault (Department of Biochemistry, Université de Sherbrooke) and Aïda Ouangraoua.

Nilson Da Rocha Coimbra, Department of Computer Science, Visiting PhD student from UFMG (Brasil)
Nilson received a master degree in Bioinformatics from Universidade Federal do Paraná. He is a computer engineer with strong background in bacteria genome assembly, functional analysis and data-mining.

Nilson is a visting PhD student from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), working on computational methods to reconstruct bacterial phylogenies under the supervision of Vasco Azevedo, Aristoles Goes (UFMG) and Aida Ouangraoua (UdeS) . Outside lab's, he enjoy photography, swiming and trekking.

Jean-Pierre Sehi Glouzon, Department of Computer Science, Postdoctoral fellow
Jean-Pierre received a PhD degree in Computer Science from Université de Sherbrooke under the co-supervision of professors Shengrui Wang and Jean-Pierre Perreault in 2017. His PhD thesis was on the development of methods to compare and explore RNA secondary structures.

Jean-Pierre started his postdoctoral training in may 2017 working on the classification of coding genes and non-coding RNA based on their structure under the supervision of professor Aïda Ouangraoua. He likes to develop ‘intelligent’ solutions using data mining and machine learning techniques to solve practical problems such as: Where can I buy coffee and creme at minimum cost?

Safa Jammali, Department of Computer Science, PhD candidate
Safa received a master's degree in Geomatics with remote sensing specialization from Université de Sherbrooke in 2016. She was trained in mathematics, image processing and data analysis.

Safa started her PhD degree in Computer Science with an option in Bioinformatics in January 2016, working on the modelization and comparison of gene structures. She is co-supervised by professors Michelle Scott (Department of Biochemistry, Université de Sherbrooke) and Aïda Ouangraoua. She likes driving sports and fighting sports. She is a kickboxing black belt, 1st dan level (she is very patient but you really don't want to mess with her).

Esaie Kuitche, Department of Computer Science, PhD student
Esaie received a master's degree in Computer Engineering from École Polytechnique de Yaoundé, Cameroun, after completing his master internship in the COBIUS lab in 2016. Esaie was trained in algorithms, data analysis and software engineering.

Esaie started his PhD degree in Computer Science with an option in Bioinformatics in October 2016, working on clustering and phylogeny reconstruction for proteins and genes. He is co-supervised by professors Shengrui Wang (Department of Computer Science, Université de Sherbrooke) and Aïda Ouangraoua. He runs marathons and likes cinema. He also campaigns against losing the habit of wearing elegant outfits during harsh winters (Up to now, he has won against all winters).

Anaïs Vannutelli, Department of Biochemistry, Inter student
Anaïs is completing a master degree in Bioinformatics from Université de Toulouse, France. She is a biocellular and physiology biologist.

Anaïs started her intership in Biochemistry with an option in Bioinformatics in January 2018, working on the identification and the evolution of G-quadruplexes in transcriptomes. She is co-supervised by professors Jean-Pierre Perreault (Departement of Biochemistry, Université de Sherbrooke) and Aïda Ouangraoua.
